(Dis)comfort Gourd: I can almost taste the sand (2022)

The calabash (bottle gourd) is a point of nostalgic familiarity. A symbol of searching for homely comforts against diasporic discomforts.

90.3 by 60.1 by 52.5 cm

Chicken wire, plaster bandages, acrylic paint, sand, pva glue, latex, thread, raw sheep’s wool, salt dough, ceramic, clear polystyrene sheet, paper and bricks

"I can almost taste the sand" tells a story of fragmentation and nurture, of abstract displacement and reaching out to faded memories of sand. The gourd is questioning the multiple meanings and evolution of "home" in a diaspora.
